"Leaving"

In the past many people have had to leave from place to place, but do people ever really understand why they leave or what they are leaving for.  I have never had the experience that some people have had of moving from country to country but I have had the experience of moving houses.  When I was younger my family moved from my old house that I grew up in for 10 years to a new house and new area for me.  When I was younger I didn't understand why we had to leave, I was only concerned with leaving my friends.  Once I got older I began to understand why we had to move.  Looking back I realize that my old house was to small to raise two kids and wouldn't have been able to hold all of us.  I also realized that no matter where I went I was going to meet new people and make new friends.  Some of the people that leave because of war, politics, health and other things, I will never be able to feel how they feel.  Many of them have had to leave behind family, their homes, their friends, their lifestyle and a part of themselves.  No one can really understand what it is like to move from place to place with out getting a choice, but in order to feel what some of those people feel when moving you have to have moved at least once in your life time.  Now looking back I am able to see that I didn't have it so bad moving to a new house, and that I am grateful that I didn't have to move to a new country.

Leaving has bad and good results, but most of the time we here about people escaping their home countries for a better life, but sometimes there are stories of people leaving their home country only to have to return home to be safe.  Some people may not agree, but for Amanda Knox leaving home had its prices; as once she moved from home she became involved in a murder case in Italy.  This was huge for Amanda as she chose to leave her home and school to so study over in Italy and it wasn't even a year before these troubles all began to happen.  However, after years of being in Italy dealing with this murder case, she was finally able to feel the happiness and relief of being able to leave a country where she was held almost like a hostage because of an ongoing trial.  She may not have had to leave as bad as some people in other countries, but for her to be able to leave is something that she will always cherish.  This unit was about leaving and the reasons why and how it affects the people.  In this case she left her home country to go to another country only to NEED to return home to feel safe and secure.

  1. I completely agree with you Travis. I too had to move houses and schools when I was younger. I was only 6 years old mind you so I feel it didn't affect me as much as it may have for you. I was sad to leave my friends and remember my first day at my new school I was crying. Yet, after my very first day of grade one, I felt welcomed, happy, and the sad feelings were soon gone. Like yourself, I do not know what it feels like to leave my home, Toronto. I have crossed country borders to vacation but have never experienced having to live in a completely different country permanently. Whether it's moving from house to house, city to city, or country to country, people migrate everyday. As many people have no choice but to leave (i.e. financial, war, natural disasters, etc.) I too feel so thankful to be living in a country like Canada. The conditions here are very good compared to many parts of the world. I am also very fortunate to be where I am, having the necessities of life: food, shelter, clothing, education, and the list goes on. It is unfortunate for many, but hopefully moving and living in a country like Canada can provide for a better, fulfilling life.
